Kolkata: A Metropolitan Court here has issued arrest warrant against Congress leader Shashi Tharoor for his last year’s controversial statement that India could become a “Hindu Pakistan.”
Tharoor had allegedly said, in a July 2018 event in Thiruvananthapuram, that, if the BJP returned to power after the Lok Sabha elections in 2019, the country will become “Hindu Pakistan.”
He claimed that if the BJP returned to power, it will frame a new Constitution to make the country move on the path of becoming another Pakistan where the rights of the minority would not be respected.
After a furor, his own party, the Congress, refrained from supporting this statement and advised its leaders to think twice before they speak.
Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala had said that, in the last four years, the Modi Government had created an atmosphere of division, bigotry, hatred, intolerance and polarization. The Congress, on the other hand, was talking about India’s culture, diversity, religions and sects.
Earlier, the Kolkata court had also summoned Tharoor.
